Short true stories
Inspired by the NHS.
I was a boy who read newspapers and I remember studying one article carefully. It was about Philippines and Imelda Marcos shoes. Out there in the Swedish mid-west, I used to play with some local kids and a farmer’s girl from next door showed me her fanny behind a barn. The fanny was exciting, but so were the shoes. I tried to picture them, 3000 pairs in a long line.

Personal reflections.
I walked over briefly and looked up at the monitor. It was full of zeros. I’m still not used to it. That’s why I was standing there, looking. Death in Corona intensive care is a monitor saying zero.

He’s blocking my way with a tall but childish presence. The mouth starts moving. Reluctantly, I take the earphones out.
“You just won the lottery!”
I look into his smooth face. The eyes are neutral.
“Just say the word nigger!” Around his mouth; the tiniest of smirks.
