If you come across a Haredi jew who looks you happily in the eye while he kicks off an English pop song for you on his guitar; you can be sure he is a Ba’al Teshuva. A Jew who has left a secular (often rock’nroll) lifestyle behind and embarked on a religious – orthodox path.
Our smiling Muslim girl sits in the middle. The girls are on a school excursion to the Temple Mount – a place sacred to Jews and Muslims alike.
Until a few years ago Jewish women covering up like this were unheard of. Still, it’s an extremely rare sight. Israelis, usually a secular bunch, teasingly refer to these women as “the Taliban.”
